Nikon D80 Reviews
Nikon announced the six megapixel D70, their first affordable enthusiasts digital SLR, it proved to be a very popular camera and strong competitor to the Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). Just fifteen months later Nikon revealed the D70s which was essentially the same camera with a some subtle tweaks (improved AF, wider flash coverage, higher capacity battery, larger LCD monitor). And so just over fifteen months on from the D70s Nikon present the latest incarnation of their ‘enthusiasts’ digital SLR line, the ten megapixel D80.The D80 slots nicely between the entry-level D50 and the semi-professional / professional D200, clearly based on the D70 design but also different enough to be seen as a completely new model. It features a ten megapixel DX format CCD (the same we presume as used by Sony in the DSLR-A100), the metering sensor from the D50 and numerous other items taken or modified from the D200.
The Nikon D80 digital SLR is the successor the D70s. Announced in August 2006, it’s positioned between the entry-level D50 and semi-professional D200, squarely targeting photographic enthusiasts or those who simply want a step-up from a budget model.The D80 inherits or tweaks many aspects from both the D50 and D200, along with introducing a few new features of its own. Starting with the headline specifications, the Nikon D80 shares the same 10.2 Megapixel resolution, 2.5in screen and user interface of the D200, although as we’ll explain in the review, there are some differences. The body itself is physically very similar to the D50 and inside there’s the same metering system.

What I liked:
* Excellent photo quality, very low noise — though see issue below
* Very solid for the most part; easy to hold
* Super fast performance: fast autofocus + excellent continuous shooting mode
* Large, bright, and sharp 2.5″ LCD
* LCD info display with backlight
* Full manual controls, and then some
* Customizable menus and button
* Useful features for beginners like D-Lighting, redeye removal, help system
* AF-assist lamp
* Superb battery life
* USB 2.0 High Speed support
* All the expandability you’d expect from a D-SLR
What I didn’t care for:
* Images on the soft side straight out of the camera (in my opinion)
* Flimsy door over memory card slot
* Included software doesn’t allow for RAW image manipulation; Capture NX costs $150 more
* Suffers a bit from button clutter; can be difficult to use
