nikon2Now this time Nikon announced its new flagship compact digital camera - the COOLPIX P5100. This upgradation from the P5000 uses a variant of Nikon’s new EXPEED image processor along with a slightly larger 12.1 megapixel sensor. The lens is unchanged - 3.5x Zoom-NIKKOR optically-stabilized with Nikon’s VR technology. However the sensor change has widened the field of view to 35-123mm equiv. The P5100 also has in-camera distortion correction which works in real time to correct the live preview as well as stored images.

The small optical viewfinder is helpful when sunlight washes out the 230,000-pixel 2.5-inch LCD, which occurs more frequently than it should. Despite its small size–and only 80 percent coverage–the viewfinder is usable for most shots. The P5100 also offers Nikon’s signature D-Lighting, which adjusts exposure post-capture so underexposed images can be brightened. D-Lighting generally works well but at the expense of adding some image noise.

Like on the Nikon Coolpix P5100, advanced functions include Manual AF area frame and corresponding Spot AF area metering, auto exposure bracketing, manual WB and Best Shot Selector. An effective Vibration Reduction (VR) technology (”Image Stabilization”) allows handholding the camera at slow shutter speeds.

The Nikon Coolpix P5100 features a quality-crafted body made of solid magnesium alloy, and the body features a quality finish with a comfortable grip covered in grid-pattern rubber. The built-in accessory shoe adds support for Nikon Speedlights and advanced i-TTL flash control. The P5100 derives its power from a Lithium Ion battery, and images are stored on SDHC / SD / MMC cards plus 52MB of built-in memory.

Other features of interest include the ability to cap the ISO range when using Auto ISO as well as a group of image-optimization settings. In addition to Normal, the latter includes Softer (for portraits), two Vivid options (Vivid and More Vivid), Portrait, and Custom (for adjusting contrast, sharpness, and saturation). There’s also a black and white option in the same menu group.

Weighing 8.1 ounces fully loaded and measuring 3.9 by 2.5 by 1.6 inches, the Nikon Coolpix P5100 is compact enough to stow in a jacket pocket and carry around all day. At the same time, this little SLR lookalike is extremely well built and feels rugged enough to withstand rougher-than-usual handling. Ergonomics are good, and its rubberized grip provides a comfortable and solid handhold.
