The FinePix S100FS provides continuous shooting of 3 frame/second at the full 11.1 megapixels. There is a choice of 14 different scene settings (SP1, SP2) optimized for each subject type. It incorporates a high-magnification 14.3x zoom lens which covers a broad zoom range from 28mm to 400mm and Super Macro for shots as close as 1cm from the subject.

The Fujifilm Finepix S100fs has “one of the largest sensors we’ve seen in a non-DSLR for many years, a lens covering a 14.3x zoom range (that, importantly, starts at a usefully wide-angle 28mm equivalent), and the eighth generation of FujiFilm’s Super CCD sensor technology.

The LCD monitor on the test camera was slightly easier to use than most digicam displays and the camera’s autofocusing system was relatively immune to hunting in low light levels. However, we had several instances when the AF system failed to focus on the centre of the field when shooting with the lens at full tele extension. This occurred most with subjects that were close to the AF limit and those in dark, low-contrast situations.

Fujifilm FinePix S100fs: Performance

The colours on the landscape mode blow me away. The grass is a lush, rich green and there’s good detail, but the fringing is horrible. Bright purple banding on the white bars at the edge of the lock and also on the windows of the building. Moving to the roof of the building, which is a typical place to find fringing, and a green stripe runs along its edge.

Fujifilm FinePix S100FS reviews from Cnet

The good: Great performance; decent ergonomics; plenty of tweakable features; very solid raw photo quality.

The bad: Horrible JPEG compression artifacts.

The bottom line
: A fast-shooting camera that delivers high-quality raw photos but abysmal JPEG versions.
