Usually, newer versions of cameras offer noticeable upgrades, such as more advanced processors, higher-resolution sensors and more features.Sometimes, though, this ‘next big thing’ turns out to actually be worse than what came before it. At just around £185, Casio’s Exilim EX-S880 joins this group, falling short of the standard set by the EX-S770.

Looking to be the next YouTube star? The 8.1-megapixel Casio Exilim EX-S880 can record good-quality movies optimized for YouTube and upload them directly to the site. Unfortunately, image quality on still shots leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared with competing cameras, like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 and the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS. At this price ($249.99 direct), the EX-S880 simply doesn’t cut it, despite its cool movie-recording features.

“Casio’s latest card camera, the Exilim EX-S880, hasn’t changed much since its predecessor, the S770. Resolution has been increased to 8.1 megapixels (from 7.2), the 2.8 inch LCD is the same, and the camera body is still the same slim, stylish one that we’ve seen before. The other new features are that the S880 has the new YouTube mode that we’ve seen on the other recent Casio cameras and a face detection system.

It has 8 megapixels and a 3x optical zoom lens. Apart from its size one of the biggest attractions of the Exilim EX-S880 is its ease of use. Set up as a simple point and shoot camera it is suitable for someone who is looking for a straightforward, snapshot camera.

It will come as little surprise to anyone who watches the digital camera market that externally the S880 is almost identical to its predecessor. It has exactly the same strong and stylish steel body, with exactly the same slim dimensions, just 94.5 x 60.4 x 17.3mm, making it once again one of the thinnest cameras on the market.

The sophisticated 7.2 megapixel EXILIM Zoom EX-Z77 joins Casio’s successful EXILIM Zoom series, whose excellent balance of superior functionality and stylish, compact look characterize the EXILIM brand. Both models add enhanced movie functionality and are the first within the line to feature YouTube Capture mode. The new cameras also feature a blur reduction function that uses motion analysis technology, an auto-tracking AF system, and face detection technology. The combination of face detection technology and the auto-tracking AF system ensures that, once the focus locks on to a person’s face, it will stay sharp and maintain the right exposure, even if the person moves. Casio has made it much easier to capture beautiful portraits.

“The EX-S880 also offers a tracking mode for its autofocus system. Once you’ve locked onto a subject, it keeps it in focus despite any movement before you click the shutter completely. In conjunction with face detection, autotracking helps to keep portraits sharp and correctly exposed, even if your subjects won’t stay still.

“A thin card-styled camera, the EX-S880 is both good-looking and functional. The metal case is attractive yet durable, but the standout feature is the dedicated video record button, and what it means for the interface. By having only one shooting mode but two separate buttons for video and still photos, Casio has churned out the most convenient camera for shooting both stills and videos that we’ve tested. Release: September 2007. Price: $300.
