Canon powershot S5 IS Reviews
Canon today announces the launch of the 12x optical zoom, 8.0 Megapixel PowerShot S5 IS. The new compact inherits optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, professional-grade optics and extensive movie functions while introducing a host of new features designed to increase the photographer’s success rate.
Powered by Canon’s DIGIC III image processor, Face Detection Technology improves focus, exposure and flash output for people shots while the new Red-Eye Correction feature effectively solves red-eye problems in captured photos. An increased sensitivity range of ISO 80-1600 complements the optical IS system for extended low light performance.
Does the S5 IS measure up to Canon’s self-proclaimed “creative performance of a professional digital SLR camera and the compact convenience of a point and shoot”? In large measure, yes, it does.
This is a capable and versatile camera, with good shutter and focus performance, great image and color quality and a lens that can range from modest wide angle to long telephoto. The auto and shooting mode options are supplemented by a full set of manual controls, and the camera will provide a fine imaging tool to the novice who never ventures past “auto”;

Canon powershot S5 IS Reviews From digitalcamerareview
PROS:
* Good image and color quality
* Good shutter/focus performance
* Image stabilization
* Great focal length lens
CONS :
* Continuous shooting mode somewhat slow and difficult to track subjects
* Disappointing (but pretty typical) ISO performance
Canon powershot S5 IS Reviews From dcresource
What I liked:
* Very good photo quality
* 12X optical zoom lens; ultrasonic motor means fast, nearly silent focusing
* Optical image stabilization
* Large and sharp 2.5″ LCD can flip-out and rotate; screen is easily visible in low light
* AF-assist lamp, great low light focusing
* Snappy performance
* Full manual controls
* Custom shortcut button + custom spot on mode dial
* Handy Auto ISO Shift, custom self-timer features
* Effective redeye reduction tool in playback mode (and you’ll need it)
What I didn’t care for:
* Redeye a big problem (but at least you can remove it)
* Some purple fringing and corner blurriness; noisy images at higher ISOs
* Electronic viewfinder has low resolution, so-so outdoor visibility
* Overly sensitive zoom controller
* Lousy lens cap
* No RAW image support
* Can’t swap memory cards while camera is on a tripod
* Would’ve been nice to see rechargeable batteries included
Canon powershot S5 IS Reviews From cnet
The good: Tons of manual and automatic features; well-laid-out controls; solid body; nice LCD display.
The bad: Lens aberrations and vignetting; some processing artifacts; lacks raw file support; redesigned lens cap still pops off too easily.
The bottom line: Though it remains a good megazoom, thanks to continued image and lens artifacts, the Canon PowerShot S5 IS is slowly losing ground to competitors.
