Canon PowerShot G9 Review
The Canon PowerShot G9, part of Canon’s line of high-end compact digital cameras, was introduced a year after the G7 hit the market. The G9 boasts more resolution and added RAW shooting capability, as well as a new image processor, the Digic III, which improves on its face detection technology.

Reviews.cnet.com about Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera Review:- This camera does take excellent photos (much better than my 5MP A95)like other online review, so I won’t bore you on that. However, I’d like to point out some problems:
1. when AF (auto focus) set to “continous” mode, there is dull “ka, ka, ka, ka” mechanical noise inside the camera, when you turn “continous” off, the noise goes away. I assume the noise comes from the constant lens focusing. But the noise sound so abnormal that I’m just afraid the lens track will break down some time soon. Can any G9 users confirm this finding is normal?
2. There are 2 yellow blotches on LCD when LCD screen is black and ambiance also black. My is very mild, but if you search google, some people have worse. I’m debating if I want to exchange it and try another one.
3. Image quality is good, noisy starting from 200ISO, so don’t use auto indoor! use P or C1, C2 and manually set ISO to 80 or 100, and use exposure compensation +2/3 or flash compensation +2/3 in low light.
Digitalcamerareview.com about Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera Review:- The G9 draws its power from Canon’s NB-2LH 7.4v 720mAh re-chargeable Lithium-ion power pack (the same battery that powers Canon’s Digital Rebel XTi/EOS 400D). Canon claims the G9 (with a fully charged NB-2LH) is good for up to 240 exposures (full time LCD use) and while I didn’t keep track, that number seems a bit optimistic to me. The G9’s battery life is pretty good, but not as good as I expected. The included charger needs about 90 minutes to re-charge the battery.
Dcresource.com about Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera Review:- If you’re viewing a RAW image, you can edit it using the totally remodeled RAW Image Task in the Browser software. The RAW Image Task appears to be derived from Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software that comes with their digital SLRs. It lets you edit virtually any RAW property imaginable, including exposure, white balance, sharpness, color, and noise reduction. I found the RAW Image Task to be both easy-to-use and responsive.
In the near future you’ll also be able to use Adobe Photoshop to process the G9’s RAW images — Adobe needs to update the Camera Raw plug-in first though.
Photographyblog.com about Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera Review:- The rear of the camera is dominated by a (fixed) 3-inch LCD screen, bigger than the 2.5-inch screen on the older G7, with a rounded window for the optical viewfinder ranged immediately above. Having previously tested the same company’s PowerShot A-series camera, I missed their vari-angle LCD (also a feature of the G6), as, to be honest, I found myself reverting to using the G9’s screen for shot composition in the main. This has a couple of advantages: firstly, you can see the live on-screen histogram to check exposure as you go, and secondly, a compositional nine-area grid provides added assistance when framing landscapes and attempting to get your horizon level. Screen visibility is also universally good, in contrast to the optical viewfinder appearing murky when used indoors under artificial light. The increased size of the LCD screen has conversely resulted in a decrease in the size of the optical viewfinder, making it more difficult to use than on the G7.
Dpreview.com about Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Camera Review:- Powerful movie functions: The photographic features of the PowerShot G9 are matched by a powerful array of movie capabilities. In addition to VGA (30fps) and high resolution XGA (15fps) movie recording, the PowerShot G9 introduces LP (Long Play) mode. This mode offers movies of half the file size without compromising on resolution or frame rate. The new Time Lapse Movie function allows the extended capture of changing scenes – such as a blooming flower, or bustling city streets - for accelerated playback as smooth VGA-quality movie clips.
