canon1Canon EOS 40D becomes the sixth Canon ‘prosumer’ digital SLR, a line which started back in 2000 with the EOS D30, and how far we’ve come. It’s been eighteen months since the EOS 30D and although on the surface the 40D looks like a fairly subtle upgrade there’s a lot that makes this an even better camera. Of course we expect a step up in megapixels, and so the 40D comes with a ten million pixel CMOS sensor with the same sort of dust reduction as the EOS 400D, an ultrasonic platform which shakes the low pass filter.

Canon Digital Camera Reviews:-

# Canon EOS 40D Review taken from Imaging-resource:- The Canon 40D also has an improved viewfinder, an enhanced Live View mode, better dust sealing, and the DIGIC III image processor that allows 14-bit analog to digital conversion for better color rendition. Canon’s improved upon the standard 9-point AF array on the EOS 40D by making all points Cross-type, which, combined with other improvements, results in a claimed 30% greater AF speed. The same battery as many previous generation Canon DSLRs is used. A new, freshly charged battery was used at the Fairground, and at the end of the day I had shot 650 frames, and the battery indicator showed one bar remaining. I would guess useful battery life at about 750 – 800 frames with temperatures in the mid-20’s C (mid-70’s F). And this was with IS lenses, which do cause greater battery drain, so close to a thousand frames with non IS lenses is not unreasonable to expect. Lower temperatures will of course lead to fewer shots.

# Canon EOS 40D Review taken from Cameralabs:- The Canon EOS 40D employs a 9-point AF system arranged in a diamond pattern, which at first glance appears to be the same as its predecessor. Canon has however upgraded the AF system so each of the 9-points are now cross-types, sensitive to both horizontal and vertical lines when used with lenses of f5.6 or brighter. The central point is also twice as sensitive as the others when used with a lens aperture of f2.8 or brighter.                                         canon2

# Canon EOS 40D Review taken from Photographyblog:- The EOS 400D is the ‘amateur’ model, the EOS 1D and 1Ds are the ‘pro’ models, but in between is a series of semi-pro SLRs which are designed to appeal to keen enthusiasts, combining more advanced features and better build quality than the amateur models but without the expense of the pro cameras. The Canon EOS 40D is the latest of these semi-pro models, following on from the 8 megapixel 30D. It’s not before time, either, because Canon’s beginner-orientated EOS 400D has been out for some time now and, during that time, the more expensive 30D has had a lower resolution sensor.

# Canon EOS 40D Review taken from Rolandlim:- I have tested out the 40D’s continuous shooting performance with a Sandisk Ultra II CF card and have updated the review. I thought it would be interesting to compare the result from this old relatively “slow” card by by today’s standard with one of the fast CF cards widely available nowadays. Please scroll down to read it.Auto ISO is available (finally), though I found it not as well implemented as it is on Nikon cameras. Canon seems to have almost grudgingly included it. The range of ISO sensitivity that is allowed in Auto mode varies depending on the shooting mode. Why can’t the camera simply allow a user settable range?

# Canon EOS 40D Review taken from Luminous-landscape:- The next difference of note is the rear panel of the camera. The new 3 inch screen is bright and as easy to read in bright daylight as any I’ve seen. The extra real estate is put to good use, with the camera now able to display an RGB histogram as well as a luminance histogram simultaneously. The viewfinder is very good; as good as it gets on a reduced frame camera and a definite step up in apparent size and brightness over the 20D and 30D. For really great viewfinder brightness and size though you have to move up to the full-frame 5D. I was pleased to note that the 40D now has the ISO visible in the viewfinder, and it remains visible during setting. Nice. (It’s also continuously visible on the top LCD panel).
